The neuroendocrine tumour team in Southeast Scotland
We have worked as a multi-disciplinary team specialising in neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) since 2004. Our team is based in the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, but also provides support to patients from Fife, Lothian, the Borders and Dumfries.
Our multi-disciplinary team involves clinicians and clinical scientists from oncology, endocrinology, GI surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, diagnostic radiology, clinical biochemistry and pathology. The multi-disciplinary team discusses all new patients to determine therapeutic options. They are then reviewed in the NET clinic or by one of the team members for this to be discussed with them.
In addition to the support of the multi-disciplinary team members we have access to chemo-embolisation, specialised chemotherapy services and support by local palliative care services. We are in process of setting up the facility to administer radionuclide therapies locally. We have excellent clinical trials support via the Scottish Cancer Research Network and have been active in the recruitment of patients to phase III clinical trials in NETs. We can also refer patients to the phase I clinical trial unit locally.
As a team we have strong links with the UKI NET group.

St Bartholomews Hospital, London
“The Department of Endocrinology at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital has for many years specialised in the diagnosis, management and treatment of neuroendocrine tumours NETs). We have a number of specialist consultants all of whom have experience in managing NETs, as well as state-of-the- art imaging and nuclear medicine facilities, most recently PET scanning, run by consultants who also have a special interest in these conditions. We offer experienced surgeons, interventional radiologists,
radionuclide therapy options and chemotherapy, and all patients are discussed in detail at regular multidisciplinary team meetings. For further specific information please contact Prof. Ashley Grossman FMedSci on 0207-601-8343, but note that we can only see patients on referral by either another specialist or a GP.”
Christie Hospital
The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest cancer treatment centres in Europe, and an international leader in cancer research and development. It provides specialist cancer treatment to patients from the Greater Manchester & Cheshire Cancer Network with a population of 3.2 million. As well as providing more specialist services for the Network, Christie also treats patients from outside Greater Manchester and Cheshire.
Patients are usually referred into Christie from other district general hospitals, having already had their cancer diagnosed. We have approximately 100 referrals a year for neuroendocrine tumours.
We have an established Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) for patients with neuroendocrine tumours consisting of Medical Oncologists, Endocrinologists, a Hepatobiliary Surgeon, a GI surgeon, a Nuclear Medicine Physician, Diagnostic and Interventional Radiologists, a Histopathologist, a Psychiatrist and Nurses (Nurse Clinician and Specialist Nurse). Through this MDT we are able to offer specialist diagnostics as well as treatments (including surgery, medical therapy, radiological interventions and radionucleide therapy). In addition, we have a strong emphasis on research and are keen to offer options within clinical trials, where appropriate.

Bristol Royal Infirmary
I (Karin Bradley) trained in endocrinology in Oxford and completed my D.Phil. in molecular endocrinology with Professor Raj Thakker which gave me significant clinical and research experience in the context of neuroendocrine tumours. I am also a member of UKI NETS and ENETS. I have been a consultant endocrinologist in Bristol since August 2007 and since my arrival have helped to co ordinate and run a monthly NET MDT. We now manage all local and external referrals prospectively via the MDT and then ongoing follow-up is with the most appropriate specialty consultant but within the MDT group. We have full participation from interested consultants in radiology, endocrinology, upper GI surgery, adrenal surgery, oncology and hepatology as well as regular input from anaesthetics and histopathology.
