Dr Neil Rushton’s 4th Challenge – Rowing up the Thames

Dr Neil Rushton has already climbed Island Peak in the Himalayas, walked the West Highland Way and scaled Ben Nevis, cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats, and, as he’s NOW finished rowing up the Thames in a coxed 4 kindly donated by St Georges Medical School from Chiswick to Lechlade in Gloucesteshire with Geoff Corser (his best man) Joe Radmore, Chris Zoeller, Terry Radmore, Mike Wood – all 50 something friends(one aged 29), one of them – Dr Anthony Atkinson – came all the way from Canada to partake.
This is the final leg of these amazing four challenges that Neil set for himself this year, all in aid of the NET Patient Foundation. We can’t thank you enough, Neil, for your dedication, for doing such a great job to publicise the work we’re doing, and for raising so much money to help our patients.
Here are a few words from Neil:
“My wife died from Carcinoid cancer some 6 years ago. It is well named the silent cancer as she knew nothing about it and had no symptoms until I casually examined her stomach as she felt a bit bloated …I am a GP…We were a very happy family with 4 children and this diagnosis pitched us into all sorts of turmoil as you cam imagine. We had 7 precious months to prepare for the inevitable . I have been a GP for 27 years and had never come across a case before. Quite rightly huge sums of money are invested in other more common cancers, however the illness is no less devastating to those families affected. My wife was a non-smoking vegetarian who was very fit at the time of diagnosis. Carcinoid tumours are slow growing tumours and I am sure research will focus on this factor. It took me a long time to feel confident to set out on something as challenging as I have done, but it has been a very cathartic experience and raising the money has been very therapeutic for me as well as being great fun.”
