The recommendation for the SIRT treatment came from my consultant Dr John Ramage at North Hampshire Hospital Basingstoke. After suggesting the treatment I had a MIBG and Octreotide scan done at Derriford Hospital here in Plymouth. Next part of the process was done at kings College Hospital London; where a multi disciplinary team reviewed my case and agreed that SIRT was a good option for me.

The cancer services manager at Kings then arrange for my case to be reviewed by my local PCT for funding, once funding was agreed I was booked into Kings for treatment. My understanding during this whole process is that this treatment is not suitable for all patients and there are a number of hurdles to overcome before the 2nd stage of the treatment is done.

I hope this answer your questions for you.

Roy,
I think this is congratulations, I've just read the other site. I was diagnosed in 2002. Anyway thank you so much for all the details. I spoke to my oncologist and he would like me to go down the Y-90 road, so I'm seeing Val Lewington at the Marsden. I have also asked to see Dr Ramage, to which he's agreed. Apparently if I get the Y-90 I can still go on and get the SIRT if possible. I will think long and hard once I've seen them both.

As you say it's important to have milestones, at first I just wanted to see my son graduate, now I want life.

All the very best.

Hi Roy

Dr Ramage wants another look at me for possible SIRT as well - thanks for all your posts giving an idea of what to expect, including a good outcome. Are you still doing well?

You mentioned blocking the gastro duodenal artery - do they unblock this afterwards, or is it shut forever? Do we not need it very much?

Where did your better half stay while you were at Kings? How did you get there, and did you find any cunning places to park?

Sorry for the delay in answering your posting, but I have been in France for the last few weeks enjoying the good weather and chilling out.

As for me I am currently feeling very well, although I feel very tired sometimes and unsure why, perhaps it old age catching up with me. I have a MRI scan and check up with John Ramage on the 31st August, so keeping fingers crossed all goes well.

The Gastro duodenal artery embolisation and MAA shunt study aren't really connected. The MAA shunt study is looking at rogue blood supplies from the liver to the lungs and bowel, they need to understand how blood flows and how it will react with the SIRT Spheres. They don't want the SIRT Spheres' heading to the lungs or bowel area, so if the reading above 20% then you can't have the treatment. Lucky for me my reading was 6%.

As my family live in Plymouth and we were unsure of what was going to happen to me during my stay, my wife and I took the decision for me to travel to London by myself. Parking at Kings has always been a pain, so I usually use the train and tube.

If you need any further details please let me know.

Regards

Roy
